Our Journey
Over 40 Years with
Four Generations
At HUC, we have had an interesting journey, not without challenges, and take pride in our strong family culture that has been passed down through generations.
Where It
Began…
Tom Heywood as he and wife Clara purchased the Fayetteville Telephone Company in early 1960s.

It all started with Tom and Clara Heywood, who owned a construction company that specialized in aerial telephone line work (up on poles). They invested in Fayetteville Telephone, in their rural community in the early 1960s and upgraded the company to the latest technology of that time.
Tom’s very resourceful son-in-law, Mick, was a true innovator who improvised and created adjustments for aerial cable-plowing across fields.
As the business grew, Tom and Clara’s son, John Heywood, started working on underground utility projects in the late 1970s, particularly horizontal drilling in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.
John’s son, Tom married Angela in 1985, and all three generations continued to work together.
The Heywood family has spent time in busy and rural communities alike, over the years. They traveled to Louisiana to help repair many properties in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. These years of experience further strengthened their bonds and reinforced their commitment to working together as a family.
Tom and Angela Heywood
Back in their hometown of Goshen, OH, from 2003 – 2010 the Heywood men worked with extended family in excavation services for many types of projects. With the help of Tom’s aunt and uncle (brother/sister team) Donn and Konnie, they cleared an area of land previously used for unuseful construction materials. Konnie was sort of the ‘brains behind the project’ knowing something good should be done with that area. There was a 20 ft ravine to be cleared and built up…and so it was! Now Donn has a comfortable residence and beautiful pond there.
Tom and his wife Angela have continued to build the business over the years and brought their sons John and Tommy into the fold as well…welcoming in the fourth generation of Heywoods.
When Tom was diagnosed with serious health challenges in 2010, his sons Tommy and John were too young to take over the business, so Tom continued to work as he was able and the business continued to grow in the following years.

The Heywood team began plowing in conduit with a company called ADB in 2015 and consistently had new business with additional companies as the utility industry and innovation in the field, grew.
When the Heywoods were faced with yet another health challenge for Tom in 2016, their son John became the driving force and took the reigns to run the business. It was during this time the company was officially incorporated as Heywood Utility Contractors and progressed into a full-service utility contractor.
John took his leadership role very seriously as a young adult and has done an extraordinary job as Superintendent overseeing all of Heywood’s client projects.
John’s brother Tommy has also been on board working in the business. He sees the hard work of generations before him and works hard to support the family’s efforts and growth.
Thankfully, Tom has overcome his health issues and is back working with Angela and their sons, John and Tommy.

Despite the health challenges over the last several years, Tom and Angela are grateful to both of their sons John and Tommy, who have taken on leadership roles in the business, continue to find solutions for any hurdle, and apply their skills and resources in growing the business.
